How I Earned $8,000+/month as a Part-Time Freelance Writer (And You Can Too!)

Before we get started, I want to start by saying that freelance writing is not a get rich quick scheme of any kind. Yes, it is possible to earn a nice income as a freelance writer but it is definitely not a quick way to riches.

How to earn money as a freelance writer

I am not an especially gifted writer in any way. In fact, my first grade teacher told my parents that I was an exceptionally bad writer. But I’ve been able to make a healthy living as a freelance writer while holding down a full time job.

It is extremely possible for anyone to make an income as a freelance writer but it will take determination and hard work.

Where I Started

I got my first freelance writing opportunity through a friend on campus. The gig was for a small online ocean focused blog that needed passionate writers. I love the ocean and have a background in biology, so it was a perfect fit.

With that first gig, I discovered that people were actually willing to pay me for my writing. It was a huge first step into the world of freelance writing that I never really believed existed. I honestly thought that freelance writing was not a viable way to earn an income. (Luckily, I was completely wrong.)

I kept writing for this ocean-focused website and started to branch out into different types of writing slowly. I found a series of low paying gigs through the ProBlogger job board. It was a great way to build my portfolio, but not a great place to find high paying gigs.

I really wasn’t sure what to do next, until I found the course that would change everything.

Where I am now

I currently make several thousand dollars a month as a part-time freelance writer. I still have a day job, but the idea of freelancing full-time is becoming more realistic every day.

Freelancing has given me the flexibility to earn more money and create a life that I enjoy. My day job salary is well under $30,000 but it pays all of my basic bills. Freelancing is allowing me to build a healthy emergency fund, save aggressively for retirement, and travel whenever I get the chance!

Without freelancing and the money I can earn through it, my life would be totally different.

NOTE: As of 2022, I’ve gone full-time as a freelance writer! I work my old day job one day per week and use the rest of my time to write 🙂

How I Got Here

My successful freelancing career is a blessing that I cannot take complete credit for. Back in late 2017, I was only earning a couple hundred dollars a month through freelancing and only a little more than a year later everything had changed. I am earning more than I really believed was possible through freelance writing.

So what changed?

I took Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing course. Holly, the founder of the course, earns over $200,000 each year from freelance writing and shares her best tips through this course. It completely changed my business (and quite honestly my life).

Throughout the course, you learn the best tactics to grow your freelance writing career. You will narrow your niche, build your client base, and increase your earnings.

Can You Earn Money as Freelance Writer?

Yes. You absolutely can if you put in the time and effort. It is not an easy way to earn money, but it is a great career to build.

I would recommend taking Holly’s course to make the process more streamlined. Holly has an extremely successful freelance writing career, so the advice she offers is truly invaluable. If you put time and effort into the suggestions she makes, then you are that much closer to success.

Of course, it is 100% possible to figure everything about freelance writing out for yourself, but the course will make the process easier.

Before you decide to take the course (or not), make sure that you have time to dedicate to your freelance writing career. Otherwise, you will be unlikely to succeed. This side hustle takes a serious time investment on your part. You should be willing to hustle, learn, and work towards your goals on a regular basis.

Should you pursue a freelance writing career?

If you aren’t willing to put in the time, then freelance writing is not the side hustle for you.

Freelance writing is a potentially lucrative side hustle that is an option for anyone that wants to earn money from home.
